Bank fees: what an overdraft opt-in does

ATM and one-time debit-card overdraft fees have a specific federal opt-in rule. A check or recurring payment is not the same transaction.

Know what you agreed to

ATM and one-time debit

A bank generally cannot charge an overdraft fee for paying an ATM or one-time debit-card transaction unless it gave the required notice, obtained your affirmative consent and confirmed that consent. You can revoke the opt-in.

Checks and scheduled payments differ

This opt-in rule does not mean every possible overdraft fee is prohibited. Checks and recurring electronic payments are treated differently. Review the account agreement and the posted transaction before you dispute a fee.

What to do next

If a collection account followed bank fees, see how to inspect and dispute the credit report.
