The federal reporting rules apply in every state. Start with the report itself, then dispute a specific error with the bureau and the company that sent it.

Get a report without paying

Use the official channel

Federal law gives you a free annual report from each major bureau. More frequent online access may be available. Do not assume that a credit score is included.

If a line is wrong

Dispute with both sides

Identify the account, explain what is wrong, and include copies of evidence. Dispute with the credit reporting company and with the company that furnished the information. Save dates and copies.

What to do next

A free report can show an incorrect debt or an account that is not yours. If it concerns collections, compare your state debt rules before contacting the collector.
