West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey announced Oct. 7 that additional federal disaster assistance has been approved for the state. The approvals cover storms and flooding this summer.
Individual Assistance was approved for Fayette, Harrison and Kanawha counties after the severe storms and flooding from Aug. 14 through 18. The governor's office says that assistance can help eligible residents with temporary housing, home repairs and other uninsured or underinsured disaster-related losses. Residents of those counties can apply at DisasterAssistance.gov, through the FEMA mobile app, or by calling the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362.
Public Assistance was approved for Barbour, Doddridge, Lewis, Pendleton, Pleasants, Randolph, Ritchie, Tucker, Tyler, Upshur and Wetzel counties after storms, flooding and landslides that began July 21. That program pays, on a cost-share basis, for emergency work, debris removal and repair of public infrastructure such as roads and utilities, not for private homes. Individual Assistance had already been approved for Lewis, Pleasants, Ritchie and Upshur counties for the July storms.
FEMA also reaffirmed its denial of Individual Assistance for Boone and Logan counties after the June flooding, rejecting the state's appeal. The governor said he is disappointed and the state will keep looking for other resources for those communities. The release does not give payment amounts or an application deadline, so check DisasterAssistance.gov for current terms.
