Choose the project route before comparing the rebate

Vermont launched its October Button Up campaign on October 1 with weatherization information, contractor help and rebates. Efficiency Vermont highlights a $100 do-it-yourself option alongside much larger professional-project offers. Those routes are not interchangeable.

The utility says its Home Performance with ENERGY STAR weatherization offer provides 75% cash back up to $7,000 when using the relevant professional program. Rental property owners may also access up to $7,000 per unit. Vermont Gas customers have a separate offer, with low-income customers described as eligible for 90% coverage up to $9,500.

Savings estimates depend on heating fuel

The DIY route concerns work such as weatherstripping or sealing small leaks. Homeowners considering insulation and larger air-sealing work should check the Efficiency Excellence Network contractor requirements and the current offer before signing a contract. A maximum rebate does not mean every project is free.

The release estimates average annual savings above $380 for oil-heated homes and above $350 for propane-heated homes after comprehensive weatherization at current fuel prices. These are program estimates, not promises for a specific house. Assess drafts, project cost and eligibility together rather than choosing solely by the largest advertised rebate.
