No Retirement Plan at Work? Rhode Island's First Enforcement Deadline Is Near

October 15 is the date for employers with more than 100 eligible employees. Employee opt-out choices remain part of RISavers.

Rhode Island's first RISavers enforcement milestone arrives October 15 for businesses with more than one hundred eligible employees. The Treasurer's official guidance distinguishes that statutory date from the earlier registration window, which was not an enforcement deadline.

Employers with five or more employees that lack a qualifying retirement plan must facilitate the state program or adopt an independent qualifying plan. Smaller eligible employers have later enforcement years. October is not the same deadline for every workplace.

The current employer page describes a thirty-day employee choice period after onboarding in which workers can opt out or customize an account. Payroll contributions follow for those who remain. Employers facilitate savings, rather than selecting staff investments.

Read contribution and opt-out terms before the first deduction rather than mistake the arrangement for an extra employer-funded benefit. Employers with a qualifying plan have an exemption route. The Treasurer's source dates to December 2025, but the approaching October 2026 date makes this a current deadline story, not a newly announced benefit or a promise of returns.
