Match the company before filing

New York City's Department of Consumer and Worker Protection announced October 2 that consumers harmed in two towing cases can seek restitution. The cases concern Breen Bros and Daniyyel Towing, not every tow performed in the city. The agency directs potentially affected New Yorkers to its claim-funds route.

The Breen Bros enforcement settlement provides $46,500 in consumer restitution, with a December 31, 2026 claim deadline. The city says the company admitted to 250 recordkeeping-violation counts. Keep the towing receipt, payment record and dispute details to identify the relevant transaction.

Restitution and penalties are different

The separate Daniyyel Towing agreement provides $20,000 in restitution and an August 1, 2027 claim deadline. The city describes recordkeeping violations and overcharges, including complaints about being forced to pay cash. The later deadline should not be applied to a Breen Bros claim.

The agency says affected consumers can email its restitution team or use nyc.gov/claim-funds. A restitution pool is not a fixed award to everyone who files, and enforcement relief should not be confused with an immediate refund of every towing fee. Identify the company, preserve records and follow the current claim instructions before treating payment as approved.
