The household must meet the heat-payment test

Nova Scotia opened its annual Heating Assistance Rebate Program October 1, 2026. The provincial September 29 announcement sets the 2026-27 rebate at C$400 and the application deadline at March 31. This is a Canadian provincial program, not United States heating assistance.

Families with combined net income up to C$45,000 and single-person households with net income up to C$30,000 may qualify. Renters and homeowners are covered if they directly pay for home heat. Guaranteed Income Supplement and income-assistance recipients also have eligibility routes described in the announcement.

Past receipt does not mean everyone is automatically approved

The province encourages including a heating bill to avoid a later request for one. Previous recipients who qualify may receive a mailed application or email reminder, which is different from an approval. Some seniors who opted in through the Property Tax Rebate for Seniors process will be told if they are automatically approved.

Apply using the provincial program instructions or paper forms available at Access Nova Scotia centres and MLA offices. The more-than-C$30-million program investment is a funding total, not a household award. Check the current household circumstances rather than assuming last winter eligibility proves this year eligibility.
