North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson announced October 13, 2026 that he sent letters to gas retailers and distributors saying state law requires them to pass along savings from the suspended 41-cent-per-gallon gas tax, and launched N.C. Fuel Check. Session Law 2026-62 suspends the state tax on gasoline and diesel through November 30, 2026, effective October 10.

Prices will not drop everywhere at once. Stations pay the tax when they receive a new delivery, and many are still selling fuel bought with the tax already paid, which the law accounts for. NCDOJ says prices should come down as stations get new deliveries, which for most should happen within about a week.

NCDOJ will review public gas price data for outliers, such as a station whose prices stay well above comparable stations nearby. Drivers can report stations at ncdoj.gov/ncfuelcheck or call 1-877-5-NO-SCAM. The office asks for the date and time of the visit, the fuel grade, a photo of the price sign and receipt, a detailed explanation, and prices at nearby stations.
