Pick the correct academic year
New York announced October 5 that FAFSA, TAP and STEM Incentive applications are open for the 2027-28 academic year. The programs can reduce college costs, but completing one form is not proof a student qualifies for every listed award.
The release gives June 30, 2028 for 2027-28 TAP applications, while June 30, 2027 applies to the preceding academic year. Current income thresholds and enrollment rules still matter. The historic $5,665 maximum mentioned in the release should not be read as a guaranteed award to every applicant.
A tuition award can carry post-graduation conditions
The STEM Incentive program covers qualifying top-ten-percent New York high-school graduates pursuing approved SUNY or CUNY STEM degrees. Its 2027-28 senior application deadline is August 15, 2027. Recipients must study full time and, after graduation, live in New York and work in an approved occupation for five years.
FAFSA can open access to grants, work-study and loans; those are different forms of assistance. Check the award type and obligations before planning a college budget. The announcement says New York students left $226 million in federal aid unclaimed in 2024-25, a historical statewide figure rather than an individual entitlement.
