The January aid change is separate

GetCoveredNJ warns that some noncitizen households may pay more for health insurance beginning in 2027 because new federal rules restrict eligibility for financial help. The state says it will contact affected households. The warning concerns assistance eligibility, not a universal statement that noncitizens cannot buy coverage.

The update distinguishes immigration statuses that retain federal help from those that may lose it. Consumers should compare their own status and household information with the official table and renewal notice rather than relying on a broad citizenship label. Tax-credit eligibility and the ability to enroll in a health plan are different questions.

Do not reuse a passed enrollment deadline

A separate Medicaid transition described on the page concerns some people losing NJ FamilyCare after September 30. The page's example of enrolling by September 30 for October 1 coverage is already past. That example should not be repeated as an open deadline on October 3.

If coverage was lost, ask GetCoveredNJ about the current Special Enrollment Period and the date coverage would actually start. Help potentially available for the rest of 2026 does not establish eligibility for 2027 federal assistance. Review the actual net premium and out-of-pocket terms before choosing a replacement, and keep the loss-of-coverage notice for the application.
