The application and benefit seasons differ

Massachusetts heating-assistance applications opened online October 1 for the November 1, 2026 through April 30, 2027 season. The state and community-action network explain that the program pays a portion of eligible heating costs. Opening an application is not the same as having a grant approved.

First-time applicants must complete an intake appointment. Returning households need to apply each year and can renew through the available online, in-person or mail routes. The local agency handles review rather than a single statewide automatic payment for anyone facing an expensive winter.

Local agencies decide eligibility

The current community-action guidance uses household size and gross annual income, with a ceiling of sixty percent of estimated state median income. Homeowners and renters can qualify, including certain households with heat in unsubsidized rent. Income and documentation need local review.

Applying is free, current reporting emphasizes. A fee-demanding helper is not required to unlock aid. Contact the local agency through the official application resources, keep heating bills and income records, and distinguish fuel assistance from separate weatherization or heating-system repair programs. The fresh opening provides time to prepare before the benefit season, not a guarantee that all winter charges will be paid.
