The IRS launched a renamed mobile app Friday, extending the older IRS2Go service with access to some Individual Online Account features. The agency says taxpayers can now use the free IRS app to view available balances, selected notices and tax transcripts, check refund or amended-return status and review payment activity. An account-specific feature may require secure sign-in; an app download by itself does not display private records.
Existing IRS2Go users do not need to download a separate replacement. The agency says normal app updates will deliver the new version for users with automatic updates enabled. The app is available in the Apple App Store and Google Play, and IRS.gov provides verified links. The IRS says the app does not replace the full website or its Business Tax Account and Tax Pro Account services. This first release extends selected individual features only.
For taxpayers with an approaching filing or payment deadline, the balance and payment-history features could be useful, but the app does not change the legal due date or automatically pay a balance. The IRS also says users may access an Identity Protection PIN through the app. Readers should not take a text message or search ad offering tax-account access as proof that an app is official: the IRS warns it will not request sensitive financial information through an unsolicited text, email or pop-up.
