The IRS announced September 30 that eligible taxpayers affected by the ongoing conflict in Israel may receive additional time, until September 30, 2027, for covered federal filings, payments and other time-sensitive acts. The new Notice 2026-63 is targeted relief, not a general extension for all U.S. taxpayers.
The covered area includes Israel, the West Bank and Gaza. Eligible groups include people with a principal residence there and businesses with a principal place of business there. The notice also covers specified relief workers, taxpayers whose preparer or necessary records are in the area, spouses for a qualifying joint return, and certain visitors killed, injured or taken hostage as a result of the terroristic action. Each category has conditions; proximity or personal concern alone is not eligibility.
The IRS automatically identifies taxpayers with a principal residence or business in the covered area using previously filed returns. Other eligible taxpayers with an address outside the area can request relief through the IRS disaster hotline at 866-562-5227. International callers can use 267-941-1000. They should be prepared to identify when they qualified, rather than assume an unrelated U.S. mailing address receives automatic relief.
The new notice covers specified acts due on or after September 30, 2026 and before September 30, 2027. Its interaction with earlier notices is important: deadlines previously postponed to September 30, 2026 move again only for taxpayers eligible under the new notice and the applicable earlier relief. People who qualified under Notice 2025-53 but not the new notice do not receive the further extension merely because they had relief before.
This postponement does not erase the underlying tax. Check the actual filing or payment involved against the notice, including any estimated-tax obligations, and keep eligibility records. A missed eligibility condition can leave interest or penalties in place. The IRS release and full notice are more useful than a headline that treats September 2027 as everyone's new deadline.
