The early application groups are specific

Iowa's LIHEAP application window opened October 1 for households with a resident at least 60 years old, a disabled resident or a housing crisis. The Utilities Commission says other qualifying renters and homeowners may apply starting November 1. The overall application period continues through April 30, 2027.

The program helps with part of residential heating costs, not the entire annual bill. Benefits depend on household income, size, dwelling type and heating fuel. An application opening is an opportunity to seek assistance, not an automatic finding of eligibility.

Tell the utility about the application

The commission says customers informing their electric or natural-gas utility that they are applying for LIHEAP receive a 30-day disconnection stay so the community action agency can process the application. Merely intending to apply should not be confused with notifying the utility or receiving certification.

Iowa's winter moratorium runs November 1 through April 1 for qualifying certified customers. The protection does not cancel accumulated charges. Keep application and utility communication records, work with the local community action agency, and check a payment arrangement rather than ignoring notices because cold weather is approaching.
