Illinois Opens Heating-Bill Help. Some Households Can Apply Before November

The October 1 priority window covers older adults, disability, young children and certain urgent utility situations. Funding can run out.

Illinois opened its LIHEAP application year October 1, but not everyone starts at the same time. The state's current page gives the first window to adults sixty and older, people with a disability, households with a child five or younger and households facing specified urgent energy problems.

The urgent categories include disconnected service, disconnection within seven days or less than twenty-five percent remaining in a propane tank. Other income-eligible households start November 1. Applications end August 13, 2027, or when funds run out.

The state directs applicants to its Request for Services process or local agency. A request does not settle eligibility or the benefit amount. For a disconnected heat-related gas or electric service or a dated disconnect notice, the state says to call the county agency directly.

Income rules differ by utility arrangement. The page lists a three-hundred-percent federal-poverty threshold for named utilities and a separate state-median-income rule for federally funded utilities or vendors. Bring the required income, bill and rental documentation. Early access is useful, but it is not automatic approval or a guarantee of the same award for every household.
