BP PLC has successfully executed the sale of a 5% stake in Aker BP, reducing its ownership in the Norwegian oil and gas producer to approximately 10.9%. This divestment is part of BP's ongoing strategy to strengthen its balance sheet, particularly as it navigates the current favorable macroeconomic environment for oil and gas.
The sale, which raised approximately NOK 9.83 billion (about $1.06 billion), reflects BP's commitment to optimizing its asset portfolio. Following the transaction, BP will retain 68.7 million shares in Aker BP, and has entered into a 90-day lock-up for its remaining shares, subject to customary exemptions.
Meg O’Neill, BP's CEO, commented, “Since Aker BP’s creation a decade ago, it has executed a successful growth strategy that has led to significant value creation. In recent months, it has further increased its value through a combination of its strong performance and the favorable macro environment. We believe now is the right time for us to realize part of this value to further strengthen BP’s balance sheet, our first priority as we build a simpler, stronger, more valuable BP.”
Barclays acted as the Sole Global Coordinator and Bookrunner, while DNB Carnegie served as Co-Bookrunner for the sale. The proceeds from this divestment will contribute to BP's expected total divestment and other proceeds for the year, which are now anticipated to reach around $9 billion, exceeding previous guidance by approximately $1 billion.
BP PLC, incorporated in the United Kingdom, operates primarily in the petroleum refining sector, as indicated by its Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code 2911. The company is listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol BP and also trades on the OTC markets under BPAQF and BPPFF.
