California Governor Gavin Newsom signed workplace-AI protections September 30, including a measure barring employers from relying solely on automated decision systems for discipline or termination. The Governor confirms the package; KQED's October 1 report identifies the measure as SB 947 with a July 1, 2027 start.
That future date matters when assessing a current dismissal. A signed bill is not automatically operative today. The safeguard requires human corroboration and notification, rather than banning every use of AI at work.
The package also addresses notice when AI causes qualifying workforce displacement and limits surveillance, including bathroom surveillance. These have distinct subjects and conditions. The broad announcement is not one immediate ban on all monitoring or automated recommendations.
Preserve decision notices and the stated reason for an employment or pay action. Current remedies depend on the law applicable when it occurred. The signature marks a new legislative safeguard with a future start, not a promise that an algorithm-related firing today has already been overturned.
