Best personal loans: the fee hiding behind the monthly payment
SoFi, Upgrade and LendingTree give borrowers three different ways to shop. The lowest payment is not automatically the lowest cost, especially when a fee is removed before the money reaches you.
Strong picks for different borrowing needs
| Company | Strong fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| SoFi | Publishes rate examples that include no-origination-fee terms and describes a direct-pay discount for eligible debt payoff. | Rate discounts have conditions. Compare the actual offer and fee option, not only an example APR. |
| Upgrade | Its fee page shows how the charge reduces proceeds and supplies a worked loan example. | Its published origination-fee range is 1.85%-9.99% of the loan, deducted from proceeds; the fee changes the cash you receive. |
| LendingTree | A marketplace that says a form can match borrowers with up to five partner lenders. | It is not your lender, shows only participating lenders and may bring multiple follow-up contacts; a prequalified offer is not final. |
Fit-based editorial shortlist from published terms checked September 27, 2026, not a loan offer, firsthand test or numerical rating.
A $10,000 loan can mean less than $10,000 in hand
Upgrade's own example shows a $10,000 loan with a 5% origination charge sending $9,500 to the borrower. The full $10,000 principal still affects repayment. If your goal is to pay an exact existing balance, check the disbursed cash and the amount that must be borrowed to meet it. Upgrade currently lists an APR range of 7.74%-35.99%, but the individual rate depends on underwriting and discounts; some offers are not available in every state.
SoFi's published personal-loan examples include no-origination-fee terms. A direct-pay discount requires eligible creditors and specified use of proceeds; it is not a universal discount. Its individual offer can differ from example terms. LendingTree is a comparison marketplace, not a lender or a guarantee that a borrower will receive five offers.
How to compare a real offer
The CFPB says personal installment loans can have origination, documentation, late, and other fees. Compare APR on the same loan amount and term, but also compare cash disbursed, total payments, payment timing and any late or secured-loan fees. Prequalification estimates can change after a lender verifies the application.
If borrowing to pay credit cards, run the alternative through Financialist's debt payoff calculator and keep the card balances from rebuilding. If your accounts are already delinquent, a loan may not fit at all. Our debt relief comparison explains that different risk.
Questions before signing
- How much cash will actually arrive after any withheld fee?
- Is the rate fixed, and which autopay or direct-pay conditions matter?
- What is the total repaid at the stated term, not just the monthly payment?
- Does the lender require a car or other collateral?
- Will a full application trigger a hard credit inquiry?
