WEBTOON Entertainment Inc. has announced significant changes regarding its leadership. The company’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chairman of the Board, Junkoo Kim, is relocating his primary residence from Korea to the United States. This move, approved by the Board of Directors on September 30, 2026, is aimed at enhancing the company’s operational capabilities in the U.S. market.
The relocation of Kim is not just a personal transition; it represents a strategic shift for WEBTOON as it seeks to strengthen its position in the competitive landscape of the miscellaneous publishing industry. The company is known for its innovative digital comics and storytelling platforms, and having its CEO based in the U.S. could facilitate better engagement with local audiences and partners.
According to the recent SEC filing, Kim's relocation will not change his roles or responsibilities within the company. However, it will result in the termination of his employment with NAVER WEBTOON Ltd., the company’s wholly-owned subsidiary in Korea. Upon this termination, Kim will receive a severance payment of approximately $184,175, which is in line with NAVER WEBTOON’s Severance Pay Policy for Executives.
In addition to this severance, Kim will also receive a one-time relocation cash benefit of $567,009, which is contingent upon his continued employment with WEBTOON through the payment date in January 2027. Furthermore, the company will cover any additional tax liabilities arising from this relocation, ensuring that Kim is not financially burdened by his dual tax residency in both the U.S. and Korea.
To formalize these arrangements, WEBTOON and Kim entered into an amended and restated employment agreement effective October 1, 2026. This new agreement includes several key changes to his compensation structure. Notably, it increases severance benefits in the event of termination without cause or resignation with good reason, doubling the severance payout from six months to twelve months of base salary.
Moreover, the amended agreement enhances the benefits associated with a change in control, providing Kim with a more substantial safety net should such a situation arise. This includes a lump-sum payment equal to twenty-four months of base salary and full equity vesting acceleration of performance stock units.
In addition to the financial aspects, the new agreement also includes provisions for director and officer liability insurance, ensuring that Kim is afforded the same protections as other corporate officers. This comprehensive approach indicates WEBTOON's commitment to retaining top talent and ensuring stability within its leadership.
On October 5, 2026, WEBTOON also announced plans to preview an upcoming Marvel Comics app at the New York Comic Con. This initiative highlights the company's ongoing efforts to innovate and expand its offerings in the digital publishing space, further solidifying its position in the industry.
The changes in leadership and the strategic relocation of CEO Junkoo Kim may have implications for WEBTOON's competitors in the miscellaneous publishing sector. As companies adapt to the evolving landscape, they may need to consider similar strategies to enhance their operational effectiveness and market presence.
As the company moves forward, it will be essential to monitor how these changes influence WEBTOON's growth trajectory and its ability to compete effectively in the U.S. market.
Details were not available in the SEC filing regarding any upcoming votes or further actions following this announcement.
