Ecopetrol S.A. has announced the appointment of Armando José Cuello Navarro as its new Executive Vice President of Energy Transition. This significant move is part of the company’s strategy to bolster its leadership team as it navigates the challenges of the evolving energy landscape.
Cuello Navarro is set to join Ecopetrol’s executive leadership team no later than October 27, 2026. His extensive background in the energy sector, with over 17 years of experience in Colombia and Peru, positions him well to lead the company's initiatives in energy transition.
In his previous roles, Cuello Navarro has held leadership positions at Compañía Energética de Occidente, Promigas Perú, and Promigas S.A. E.S.P. His expertise spans strategy, investments, financial performance, and corporate governance. Notably, he has also served as Colombia's Deputy Minister of Energy, bringing valuable public sector experience to his new role.
At Ecopetrol, Cuello Navarro will face key challenges, including advancing Colombia's energy security and sovereignty through a diversified energy matrix. He will also work on strengthening alignment with national energy policy, ensuring the reliability of the natural gas supply, and developing profitable projects that optimize the energy portfolio.
In addition to Cuello Navarro's appointment, the Board of Directors has also approved the appointments of Camilo Andrés Rojas Castro as Principal Legal Representative for Goods and Services Procurement and Mauricio Gutiérrez Dangond as First Alternate to the Company’s General Legal Representative. These appointments are expected to enhance the company's operational capabilities.
Ecopetrol is the largest company in Colombia and a major player in the integrated energy sector across the Americas. It is responsible for over 60% of the hydrocarbon production in Colombia and holds significant positions in the petrochemicals and gas distribution segments. The company also has a stake in strategic basins in the U.S., Brazil, and Mexico, further solidifying its role in the global energy market.
This leadership change comes at a crucial time as the energy sector faces increasing pressure to transition towards more sustainable practices. Ecopetrol's focus on energy transition may influence competitors in the crude petroleum and natural gas industry to reevaluate their strategies in response to shifting market dynamics.
